Hey there! I’m Cody Toone. Thanks in advance for checking out this little site. If you’re family and know all about me, ignore this next bit – this is for the random surfer who might be here by accident.
I’m the new teacher at the East Cardston Hutterite Colony located just west of Cardston Alberta, Canada. This is not a history of Hutterites (which is fascinating). And this isn’t some mind shattering insight in to the pedagogical methodology of multi-grade and ESL teachers. This site IS a personal (and therefore limited) report of the goings on in my school.
While this is my first year on a colony, this is my fifth year as a teacher. My first three years of teaching were spent at Copper Hills Youth Center in West Jordan, Utah. Last year I moved my family back to the mother-land and spent the year as a long term substitute. In June I was offered the job as the teacher at the East Cardston Colony. I teach teach six grades in a one room school. My students range from age 6 to 14. I teach all subjects.
For anyone willing to listen to what I have to say, let me start by urging you to read and search several sources before coming up with an opinion about Hutterites. If you have absolutely no knowledge about this group of people, may I suggest this site: www.hutterites.org. I found it fair and informative.
Finally, I consider myself a guest at this colony (as most teachers in my position do); therefore, I hope to say nothing that would offend or otherwise compromise my position of trust with these wonderful people.
